ABOUT THIS SKILL

A conversation between Greg Eisenberg and Jonathan Courtney (AJ&Smart) about why most small businesses avoid paid ads, how to create simple, high-trust funnels, and the mindset shift from “websites” to step-by-step conversion machines.

KEY PRINCIPLES (15)

Market Gap

There is a massive empty space for non-agency, non-douchey solo ad consultants who serve specific verticals.

Agencies are too expensive and intimidating; the alternative is often 25-year-olds in gold Rolexes. A single trustworthy operator can dominate niches like salons, female infoproduct owners, or yoga retreats.

Why: Trust and relatability convert better than flashy displays of wealth, especially in Europe and among small-business owners.

"I think there's a massive empty space in the market for not douchey, non-agency companies who help other people run Facebook ads."

Pricing Model

Take a percentage of revenue instead of charging retainers to remove risk for the client.

Approach event organizers whose retreats aren’t full and offer to fill seats with ads in exchange for a cut of every ticket sold.

Why: Clients only pay for results, making the offer irresistible and easy to say yes to.

"I can fill it up for you using Facebook ads, but I'm going to take a cut of every ticket sale. The end."

Funnel Philosophy

A funnel is a step-by-step process to turn a stranger into a customer; a website is just a business card.

Every page has one job—sell the next step—until the final sale is made.

Why: Clarity of purpose beats beautiful but aimless web pages.

"A website is a business card just saying, here's all the stuff we do. A funnel is a step-by-step process to bring someone from being a stranger to a customer."

Traffic Strategy

Meta ads still work—just not for people under 35.

Audiences over 40 are highly reachable on Facebook and Instagram; ignoring them leaves money on the table.

Why: Demographic mismatch causes false negatives; older audiences have disposable income and lower ad competition.

"Meta ads are only dead for people under 35... a massive amount of the population aren't seeing these things."

Content Sequence

Start with organic content to dial in messaging, then amplify with paid ads.

Post on LinkedIn, Twitter, or Instagram to test hooks and angles; once something resonates, pour ad spend behind it.

Why: Cheap feedback loops prevent expensive ad mistakes and sharpen copy before scaling.

"I don't think you should start with ads... do organic content... then you know, okay, this is the messaging I need... now I'm ready to experiment with paid ads."

Copywriting

Write copy that increases the buyer’s status in the eyes of their peers.

Frame the product as making the user more useful or respected at work or in their community.

Why: Status is a universal human driver; leveraging it lifts conversion.

"Does this copy push towards the idea that it will increase someone's status?"

Copywriting

Use the pain–pleasure axis to decide emotional direction.

In downturns, move prospects away from pain; in good times, move them toward pleasure.

Why: Emotional context determines which trigger is more persuasive.

"When the economy is really bad... you want to talk about moving away from pain... In good times... you talk a lot about moving towards pleasure."

Funnel Metrics

Track return on ad spend (ROAS) and lifetime value, not vanity metrics.

AJ&Smart’s flagship funnel spends ~€79k/month to collect €252k, a 318% ROAS sustained since 2020.

Why: Cash-in-cash-out clarity keeps the business focused on profitable growth.

"We spent $80,000 on ads in June... total cash collected was $252,000... our return on investment... was 318%."
