TECHNIQUES
KEY PRINCIPLES (14)
Chasing generational wealth is overrated; living a wealthy life is underrated.
Turned down a $100 M blank-check offer because the goal felt infinite and unfulfilling; prefers enough money to do what he wants without external constraints.
Why: Infinite goals lead to perpetual dissatisfaction; finite, lifestyle-oriented goals preserve energy and happiness.
"I'm not chasing generational wealth. I don't need hundreds of millions of dollars or billions of dollars... I want to live a wealthy life, I want to live a rich life, I want to be able to do whatever it is I want, but I don't need generational wealth."
Define wealth as freedom, not a number.
Avoids setting a specific dollar target because targets keep doubling; instead optimizes for autonomy and lifestyle flexibility.
Why: Numeric goals shift upward once achieved; autonomy is a stable, intrinsic metric.
"I don't have a number because people I know who have numbers are just, they hit the number and then the number becomes 2X... The way I think about it is I want to be able to do what I want."
Use social media only on desktop to kill dopamine loops.
Removes addictive apps from phone; only keeps TikTok buried and rarely posts; desktop UX is less sticky.
Why: Mobile interfaces are engineered for infinite scroll; desktop friction reduces compulsive usage.
"You gotta be crazy to put social media apps on your phone... the experience on desktop isn't as dopamine-friendly than a mobile."
Keep a quarterly learning list with three new skills.
Uses the Things app to list three new things to learn every quarter—mix of business gaps and personal curiosities (e.g., Stanford finance courses, guitar, golf).
Why: Explicit scheduling converts curiosity into progress; prevents drift.
"Every quarter, I have three new things that I'm trying to learn... if you don't put it in a list and actually have homework and put it in your calendar, you're never going to get around to it."
Show up to meetings with small, thoughtful gifts for outsized ROI.
Gave away 1,000 mini-Buddhas in a year; recipients (including Uber founder) emailed thanks years later; gifts must be memorable and inexpensive.
Why: Unexpected generosity creates lasting mental anchors and word-of-mouth.
"People just like started talking about it... they would send me an email right after and be like, by the way, thanks, I'm looking at the Buddha right now."
Gift when least expected, not on birthdays or first meetings only.
Surprise gifts at month 6, 18, or 24 deepen relationships; avoid scripted systems.
Why: Reciprocity is strongest when the act feels spontaneous and human.
"The best time to give a gift is to give a gift when the person least expects it... Don't be like a bot."
Use analogies to make ideas sticky.
Analogies compress complex concepts into memorable visuals; reference to Made to Stick book.
Why: Brains retain concrete images better than abstract facts.
"Use analogies. People remember them... The reality is when you have a conversation with someone for an hour, they're going to remember one or two things."
Write copy conversationally to give readers a front-row seat.
Use phrases like "he goes" and direct quotes to mimic speech; increases engagement.
Why: Conversational tone lowers cognitive distance and builds rapport.
"When you're conversational and you talk like the person that you're bringing up... it is just a way more effective way to get your point across."
