Pricing, Positioning, and the Art of the Upsell

ABOUT THIS SKILL
Alex Hormozi coaches Sam, an artist teaching painting online, on how to structure offers, price tiers, and conversion funnels to scale from ~$13k/mo to $100k/mo.
TECHNIQUES
KEY PRINCIPLES (10)
Anchor high first, then downsell to the real core offer.
Present the $5,000/year mentorship first; if they decline, offer the $460 annual ($29/mo) as “everything except the 1-on-1.”
Why: High anchor makes the mid-ticket price feel like a bargain and increases perceived value.
"if you start with the five, you can downsell the 500 or whatever, 29 times whatever that is, 460 or whatever it is. That probably anchors really well."
Create three clear tiers—free, mid-ticket subscription, high-ticket mastermind—with ascending deliverables.
Free: long tutorials; $29/mo: more tutorials + weekly live class; $5k/yr: two classes/week + on-demand 1-on-1s.
Why: Clear value separation lets customers self-select and makes upsell path obvious.
"$29 is the middle, $5,000 a year is the top, and free is the bottom."
Every paid customer should immediately receive an onboarding call that doubles as a sales conversation.
Book a free strategy or coaching call for every new $29 subscriber; use it to pitch annual or high-ticket.
Why: They already have wallet out—highest-probability segment to upgrade.
"those seven people per week that are signing on... They should get an onboarding call for free immediately included with that $29."
Gate part of the free community behind a ‘strategy call’ to multiply booked calls.
Lock 50% of free content; unlock only after a 15-min call that qualifies budget & need.
Why: Adds scarcity and clear next step, lifting DM-to-call conversion from ~3% to 10%+.
"we need to give something... to get on the call... half of it's locked, half of it's unlocked."
Front-load roadmap and proof in the first 15 seconds of every YouTube video.
State who you are, how many you’ve helped, and the exact 3-6 things they’ll learn in this video.
Why: Retention and CTA click-through both rise when viewers know the payoff early.
"you want all of that to be covered within the first 15 seconds."
Insert contextual CTAs at the one-third mark and pin a comment with the lead magnet link.
Show the physical blueprint on camera, flip to the relevant page, then invite opt-in; pin comment stays evergreen.
Why: Doubles opt-ins vs end-of-video or description-only CTAs.
"at about a third, it's like you provided sufficient value that you can take 20 seconds..."
A/B test three thumbnail concepts: pure painting, painting + 3-word hook, face + painting background.
Text yourself the thumbnail to ensure readability at mobile size.
Why: CTR differences of 10-30% are common; small thumbnails must be legible.
"send yourself a text of the icon, and then you'll actually see how few words you can really put there"
Track the full funnel: click → opt-in → community join → DM response → call booked → show → close.
Add UTM parameters and separate dashboards for free-to-call and $29-to-call paths.
Why: Identifies the weakest step (currently DM-to-call) and quantifies ROI of each fix.
"you need to put tracking in place so that you know click all the way through."
